Training in Koshiki Kendo is based on the concepts and principles of the Japanese sword the "katana". Although, the primary training weapon in Koshiki Kendo is the "shinai" a bamboo sword. All training " begins with the katana and finishes with the katana." In this way students are continuously reminded that the concepts and principles of the katana is what underpins the essential teachings of Koshiki Kendo.
Shinai training allows a student to engage in safe free-fight bouts that will allow them to practice and test their skill. Furthermore, official competitions are also available for those who wish to test their skill and ability.
In addition to shinai training Koshiki Kendo also teaches "Matogiri" target cutting commonly known as "Tameshigiri."
This type of training teaches a student how to cut with a real sword in a controlled and safe environment.
